Club Handicap Knockout Competition 2013/2014

Completion of the 2013/2014 Handicap Knockout was slightly delayed but perseverance paid off with Ed Maxwell overcoming the might of Jamie Bebb 10-5. Rumour has it that Ed did hit the strings and that the balls were in reasonable condition.

Junior Open Day

We had our first junior open day at MTRC on 24th September and we had 3 juniors per group. The sessions were very successful and the parents were very positive and enthusiastic about the introduction of the junior programme. The aim is to attract more juniors into the game so if you would like to attend or know anybody who might be interested, please get in contact. The next sessions will be on 21st, 22nd, 28th & 29th October. There are also plans to introduce a 16-24 year old group as well in the hope of attracting a few university...

Dan Jones

Dan Jones, formerly with Seacourt, now a touring professional, is assisting until Darren Long starts in November and is working with us for 2 days a week.  He is particularly experienced in teaching Under 18’s.  There is a Junior Open Afternoon on 24th September at 4.30 to 6.30 pm.  Everyone is welcome and whether you are members or friends of members, you are welcome to try out Real Tennis.  Please contact Steve Brockenshaw if interested.

Darren Long joins MTRC

The Club are very pleased to announce the appointment of a new Professional, joining us on 4th November.  Darren Long, currently Assistant Professional at Canford School.  As well as being a polished performer on the tennis court, winner of the Satellite Trophy, Browning Cup and more, Darren is also a keen rackets and squash player.  We are looking forward to welcoming him to Manchester and hope all our members will too.

Boomerang Cup

The Boomerang will be held in Melbourne from 9th to 23rd January 2016.  This includes the Boomerang Cup which is a team event and the Royal Melbourne Tennis Club Handicap Doubles which is, as it suggests, a Handicap Doubles Tournament.

New Court Lighting

All players will be very pleased to hear that the Club are installing new LED lighting on both the tennis and the rackets courts in the last week of August.  This will improve the lighting during the evening and in those dark winter months and their longer life will reduce maintenance costs and the LED system will utilise substantially less power.

Student summer membership

The Club is offering a Temporary Summer Membership for members’ children, grandchildren and their friends.  The cost will be £25.00 (no joining fee) for the whole of July and August and until the 4th of September 2015. Facilities are available similar to those of Playing Members but keys to the building will not be issued.  A tournament will be arranged toward the end of the summer for those wishing to come in groups of four or to create such groups.  Details of Temporary School/Student Summer Membership and an application form are attached. MTRC vs Jesters WEEKEND

MTRC are playing the Jesters on April 18/19 at home.  Singles on the Saturday and Doubles on the Sunday.  The format: Singles on Sat afternoon, a few drinks and dinner either at the Club or at a local reasonably priced restaurant.  Sunday morning doubles, light lunch at the club.  The Jesters are a sociable touring club, mainly from the south. Could you please let me know your availability for either or both, all welcome, let’s show the southerners some northern hospitality.

The Club singles tournament of the year

Friday 27th   February –Sunday 1st March 2015.  The Club singles tournament of the year.  This is for all members and every person has a chance of winning with it being played off handicap. Please speak to the Professionals, giving your preference as to when you would like to play.  So come on all new members, you have to be in it to win it and the winners name goes up on the board.  Lunch will be served each day and a Dinner on Saturday night.  Please sign up on the notice board or email me.

All friendly/social tennis matches now to be played as sets to 6 instead of 10 except for club KO matches. Unfinished sets to be recorded also. Reason being, new match recording system doesn’t allow a double digit shoreline. Steve.
